The hot summer sun poses many risks to our skin. Therefore, it’s important to take a few protective steps. Here are just a few simple reminders to help you along as you enjoy the long sunny days.

Stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure. Wear a hat whenever possible. Always use sunscreen and lip balm (SPF 45 or higher).

Summer months warrant a special skin care regimen – one that hydrates and keeps your skin clean and free of grime and sweat. Avoid wearing heavy makeup and foundation when spending time in the sun as it can lead to break-outs and pimples in these months. To avoid break-outs, make sure you wash your face with cool water at least 3-4 times every day. No need to use a face wash every time, clean water would do just fine.

Chronic flushing or redness due to sun exposure can lead to permanently dilated capillaries on the face.  If you experience flushing, try a facecloth soaked in ice water, then wrung out and held to the neck. It cools the blood that’s flowing to the face and reduces redness.

Should you experience a sunburn, treat it immediately by applying a moisturizer that contains Aloe Vera or Soy. Soak a facecloth in a bowl of skim milk and ice and apply it to the area for five to ten minutes. Consider taking aspirin or ibuprofen to help reduce any swelling, redness and discomfort.
